A terrible crime recently happened in Sri Lanka. a female doctor was sexually assaulted at the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital. No matter who the victim is, such a crime must be condemned. But the fact that it happened inside a hospital raises serious questions about safety at workplaces, especially for professionals who serve the public.
The way medical staff stood together after this crime was inspiring. Their response not only showed unity but also pressured law enforcement to take strong action.
I usually write about financial and digital crimes, but no matter what type of crime, criminals often have the same kind of mindset. This time, I want to focus on how we can identify criminal behaviour early so we can take action to protect ourselves.
Why Are Criminals Becoming More Dangerous?
Crime has always existed, but something has changed. Criminals today are more fearless, more aggressive, and less concerned about consequences. This shift in behaviour is deeply worrying, especially because it affects every part of society—from ordinary people to professionals like doctors and teachers.
But why is this happening? There are several key reasons:
1. Less Fear of the Law
One of the biggest reasons criminals act so boldly is that they don’t fear punishment. They believe they can get away with crimes because:
- Law enforcement is weak – Many criminals know that police investigations can be slow and inefficient.
- The legal system takes too long – It often takes years to punish offenders, and by then, the impact of their crime has faded in public memory.
- Punishments are not strong enough – Some crimes receive light sentences, which do not discourage criminals from committing them again.
When criminals see others walk free or receive minor punishments, they feel encouraged to commit crimes without hesitation.
2. No Self-Discipline
Another major factor is the lack of self-control and discipline in certain individuals. Many offenders:
- Do not respect rules or boundaries.
- Have a strong sense of entitlement, believing they can do whatever they want.
- Lack basic human values like respect, responsibility, and self-restraint.
These individuals often grew up in environments where bad behaviour was ignored or even encouraged, leading them to believe that aggression and crime are normal.
3. Lack of Education & Development
Education plays a crucial role in shaping a person’s thinking and behaviour. A lack of education often leads to a lack of moral understanding. When people do not learn the difference between right and wrong at an early age, they:
- Struggle to control their emotions, leading to violent behaviour.
- Do not understand the consequences of their actions.
- Think only about their own desires, without considering how they harm others.
Many criminals come from backgrounds where education was not a priority, and as a result, they develop a narrow mindset that justifies violence and wrongdoing.
4. Changing Society & Influence of Media
The world today is not the same as it was a few decades ago. Modern society has changed in ways that encourage crime, including:
- Glorification of violence in media – Movies, TV shows, and even social media often present criminals as powerful or even admirable figures.
- Easy access to harmful content – The internet allows people to watch, learn, and even discuss criminal activities freely.
- Lack of strong community values – In the past, families and communities played a big role in teaching discipline and morality. Today, many people feel disconnected, making them more likely to adopt selfish or harmful behaviours.
Some people see bad behaviour as normal because they grow up in an environment that does not teach better values.
The Need for Stronger Laws
The medical strike is a chance to push for better
legal protection. The government must act now:
- Fast-track
sexual crime cases to make sure justice happens quickly.
- Increase
punishments for repeat offenders so they don’t get second chances.
- Make
workplaces safer by improving security and monitoring systems.
- Encourage
public pressure—when people speak up, authorities are forced to
listen.
If we don’t take action now, criminals will continue to grow
bolder.
Conclusion: Act Now Before It’s Too Late
This case is a wake-up call about how criminals are changing and why we need stronger laws.
- We need to stay aware and educate others on recognizing danger signs.
- We need to push for legal changes that punish criminals more strictly.
- We need to demand safer workplaces, so professionals don’t have to fear for their safety.
This isn’t just about one crime—it’s about stopping a rising trend of planned, fearless attacks. The time to act is now.
